What Is Quartzite?

Quartzite, not quartz.

The similar names cause plenty of confusion, so here’s the difference. Quartzite is a natural stone that starts life as sandstone and, under intense heat and pressure deep in the earth, transforms into quartzite. It’s mined, cut into slabs, then shaped with diamond blades before being polished and sealed for durability.

Quartz, by contrast, is a manmade, engineered stone made from crushed stone, resins, and pigment. In short, quartzite is natural and quartz is engineered.

Simple Care & Maintenance

Easy to live with.

Quartzite asks for the same care as other natural stones. Wipe up spills promptly and use trivets under hot items to protect the surface. A yearly sealing is recommended to keep etching and stains at bay, and that little bit of routine keeps it looking its best.

Common Questions

Good to know.

What’s the difference between quartz and quartzite?

Quartzite is a natural stone formed from sandstone under heat and pressure. Quartz is a manmade, engineered stone made from crushed stone and resins. One comes from the earth, the other from a factory.

Does quartzite need to be sealed?

Yes. Like other natural stones, quartzite does best with sealing about once a year to minimize etching and staining.

Is quartzite durable?

Very. It’s a hard, natural stone that stands up well to everyday use, which is a big part of why it’s become so popular.

How do I care for a quartzite countertop?

Wipe up spills quickly, use trivets under hot pans, and seal it yearly. That routine keeps the surface protected and looking beautiful.
